Weight Loss at 40: Make the Impossible Possible

Weight Loss Diet PlansIf you are a woman over 40 and have decided you need to lose weight, you have probably already noticed that it is more difficult to lose it now than when you were in your 20s.  Things you used to be able to eat just stick to your thighs and even doubling the exercise you do will not get rid of the extra weight.

The nice thing to know is that you are not crazy.  Even if you have not yet reached that wonderful phase called menopause, your hormones are still going crazy.  Your estrogen levels are dropping and your body, wanting to compensate, will convert cells into fat cells because fat cells can produce estrogen.  See the cycle women are caught in?

Besides the crazy hormones and your body making more fat cells, your metabolism is slowing down.  That is a natural part of aging.  Your body no longer requires the same amount of energy it did when you were younger, so it slows down the rate at which it burns the calories.  Then add in the stress from children, careers, and partner. Slowly add lack of sleep and voila!  You have a recipe for weight gain.

You’ve tried cutting down on your calories.  You’ve tried an exercise class or two.  Nothing seems to be working.  Is it possible for women over 40 to lose weight?

Choose foods that contain phytoestrogens, which mimic the effects of estrogen.

Foods like soy and soy products, broccoli, flax seed, and nuts are excellent sources of phytoestrogens. This will help reduce your body’s production of fat cells and aid in weight loss.
