If Dr. Horrible had known the actual recipe that is destroying the world’s oceans, he might not have lost Penny to his relentless pursuit of creating a Freeze Ray and destroying Captain Hammer. Luckily, Dr. Horrible, being a fictional character, doesn’t have to worry too much about the actual extinction of life on Earth that is starting within the Earth’s oceans.

Apparently, all it takes to put the entire world at your mercy is one part over-fishing, one part massive climate shifts, one part polluting the waters with poisonous chemicals and one dash of world-wide apathy. That, according to a panel of twenty-seven scientists, is going to be the cause of widespread extinction of many of the inhabitants of the sea.

Unfortunately for those that are of the “that won’t happen for years beyond my lifetime”, may be sorely mistaken. Scientists are predicting that within one generation the farewell party can begin. It’s not like this has happened in the past. Events ranging from 251 million years to 450 million years ago have shown us that all creatures great and small get wiped out once in awhile and with the ocean on the brink; it may just happen to humanity. The sad state of affairs is that the ocean is a very delicate system, with most of life being affected by the food chain. If you lose one species, plankton or coral, then the entire thing goes to pot.

Scientists (the good kind, not like Dr. Horrible), are stating that the oceans are degenerating faster than what was originally predicted. While it isn’t quite to the point where people should drive their cars into the ocean in futility, especially since that would be considered pollution, it is to the point where everyone needs to be aware, have the political hammer slam down harder on companies that are destroying the oceans and inevitably all of humanity.

The United Nations acting alone is simply not going to be enough to handle this impending crisis. If Social Media can change the world politically as we have seen in the past few months in regions across the globe, then it is time to use the power that each of us wields, our opinions and networks of faithful followers and not only bring attention to this matter, but force the world to what it can to stop the destruction of the oceans.
