Obama’s Show Of Solidarity With Gulf Coast Businesses

President Barack Obama visited Mississippi Gulf Coast of Monday to express solidarity with business owners of this tourism hot spot, affected recently by Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Help for affected businesses along Gulf Coast will form an important part of his discussion with BP executives on Wednesday, he said after he was told by a hotel owner that his business had dropped by 40 percent.

“There’s still a lot of opportunity for visitors to come down here. There are a lot of beaches that have not been affected and will not be affected,” Obama said after a meeting with Govs Haley Barbour, R-Miss. and Bobby Jindal, R-La. “If people want to help, the best way to help is to come down here and visit,” he added.

As thick, black oil begins to wash beaches in Alabama on Saturday, tourists seem to have found elsewhere to go. Baldwin County on Alabama’s coast annually attracts about 4.6 million visitors, who spend about $2.3 billion, according to an estimate by the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Orange Beach and neighboring Gulf Shores, which boast of some of the whitest beaches in the world, account for most of this income. On Saturday, a long stretch of beach on Gulf Shores was covered with thick brown oil, with clean-up crews piling the puddle and tar balls in garbage bags.

Ban On Deepwater Drilling Temporary: Salazar

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Wednesday that the ban imposed by the Obama administration on deepwater drilling in the wake of one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history is temporary. Salazar said this to allay concerns raised by lawmakers and industry experts that the ban would harm the economy and result in job loss.

At the same time Salazar informed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that safety must be ensured before the activities are allowed to resume. The six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling is necessary to put in place new safeguards and standards in environmental protections, so that the oil spills like the one in the Gulf of Mexico recently don’t recur, he said while defending the ban.
