Americans’ Salt Intake Level Alarming
It has been revealed in a recent survey analysis generated by the government that the salt intake of Americans has increased considerably. Whooping Cough Assuming Epidemic Proportions
The sudden outbreak of whooping cough in the valley has claimed the lives of five infants, all Latino with age less than three months. As per the state health authorities, 910 confirmed cases of whooping cough have been reported so far till June 15. The number is bound to increase in the days to follow. The state government declared the deadly infection as an epidemic as a precautionary measure. Apparently, the number of confirmed cases is more than four times compared to last year.
Obama Asks Insurance Companies To Justify High Rates
President Obama on Tuesday warned the health insurance industry not to use the recent health care reform legislation as an excuse to raise premiums. He said this after meeting with the CEOs of major medical insurance companies at the White House.
Recognizing that the industry has genuine cost drivers, he told the CEOs that any substantial raise in the premium would have to be sufficiently justified.
FDA Warns Against Fake ‘Generic Tamiflu’
In a recent development, Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers against the use of a fake Tamiflu drug available on Internet as ‘generic’ Tamiflu. FDA confirmed that it has not approved a generic version of Tamiflu, thus the drug being sold may not be safe.
It is known that the approved Tamiflu drug contains oseltamivir which is used in the treatment of flu, whereas this drug contains cloxacillin, which is more or less in the same category as penicillin. Thus by using the ‘generic’ Tamiflu drug, a person who is allergic to penicillin can develop a serious life threatening disorder, called anaphylaxis.
‘High Risk’ Health Insurance Pool From September
In an attempt to cover the insurance needs of a large number of people in America, it has been decided that federally funded ‘high risk’ insurance pools would come into effect as soon as September 1. The decision comes as a reprieve for those who couldn’t afford private health insurances because of their pre-existing medical conditions. California is all set to be one of the first states to comply with this federal reform law.
As per the new policy, people who were earlier refused medical insurance on account of their chronic illness can now take advantage of the new ‘high risk’ insurance pool by paying much lower premiums.
