Online Dating Sites Warn Users of Scams

onlinedating Online Dating Sites Warn Users of ScamsOnline Dating

In a world where internet online dating has become more of the norm and less unusual, there have also been a rise in the number of online dating scams to show up. These scams generally occur within the online dating website and can be easily ignored. While lying about your name and age in your profile is not seen as uncommon, be wary of people that just sound too good to be true; they usually are.

Another red flag is if someone you are chatting with ever asks you for money. They will come up with a million excuses why; they don’t have a job, relative is sick, really want to come see you but just can’t afford it, or anything that just sounds far-fetched.

While some of them may be actually telling the truth, go with your gut on this one. If you are determined to meet in person, it is best to do so in a public place, just in case.

Online dating security is obviously on the mind’s of members right now with such extensive media coverage on the subject. That has not stopped new sites like findyourfacemate to launch; even if the site isn’t completely ready. This dating site uses technology that can be used by anyone that is interested in matching one photo to another photo. Applications that are already available are an auto tagger that automatically tags photos in your Facebook albums. That project is still in alpha testing. Find Your FaceMate plans to use the technology to match members that are similar in appearance to other members.

Online Dating Security

Currently the site is accepting members and photos, but there isn’t much else going on. On their Facebook Page, http://www.facebook.com/findyourfacemate the company was asked about security features when the question was posed about someone simply using a photo editing software to add attributes to a picture in order to deceive the software and be matched with whomever one wanted to be with.

A representative for the Facebook Page for Find Your FaceMate wrote,

“…desire is created when we find someone with our own facial features. Our site will be able to discern what facial features have been photshopped. I will run this by my tech guy….but it’s all about structure of the face…so I don’t think photoshopping will work.”

After speaking with the tech guy, the representative had this to say,
“users have to approve matches for their matches to be allowed deeper access into their profile. While you can modify a photo to get different matches, you are not being granted access to their personal information until they accept you as a match.”

Quirky Niche Online Dating Sites

As more and more quirky niche online dating sites pop up, members will want to be assured about the legitimacy of the security being offered on the site. New members will be gained, not because of the match making technology being implemented, but because of the security that the online dating site can provide both in terms of physical safety as well as personal information and privacy concerns.

While any online dating site can be prone to scams and security breaches, it takes a professional organization with the technical backing to produce the software needed to provide a higher level of security. Even with recent concerns, Match.com members are in a better position as the company bolsters their security and member protections. Online dating site startups that appear out of the woodwork may need to consider how they will be able to compete with the modern age of online dating.

Online daters are now redefining the way they see the dating service providers that they join. People that are more educated about the dangers that lurk on the internet will now be less likely to join lesser known services and serious daters will seek larger companies like a Match.com or an eHarmony.com that can provide security and not just a fun-dating gimmick.
