Look at Vacation Rentals Instead of Hotels for Your Vacation Stay
Vacation apartment rentals are becoming the thing to do when vacationing. It takes some leg work and research – you have to contact the owner and make the arrangements, and clean up your own mess before you leave. Most of the time, you get more for your money and if you want the “local experience” you will be more likely to get it.
Database of Rentals
There are three sites that provide a database of rentals across the world. The drawback – how do you know it’s not a scam and the owner won’t vanish along with your money?
Homeaway.com is one of the largest rental sites. They’ve got rentals in about 118 countries, and lists private owners as well as its own properties for rent. When searching their site, you can specify the type of property you want – apartment, house, condo – as well as things like how many bathrooms and location. The site provides photos and tourist information on each property, as well as what languages the owner speaks. The one thing missing is the method of payment expected.
Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO) is another site. It was actually purchased by Homeaway in 2008. It is harder to navigate through the site and find what you are looking for as it doesn’t have a search feature beyond location.
Craigslist is another site to visit to find vacation rentals. It’s great for urban areas and finding funky properties that may not make it past the screenings of Homeaway and VRBO. Unfortunately, the site does not screen posters, so you stand more of a change of being the victim of a scam.
