A lot of people still believe that the best college in America is located in Cambridge or Princeton, as well as in West Point or Annapolis. According to Forbes, the college can be found at the heart of Berkshire Mountains. Williams College, a 217-year-old private liberal arts school, aces the list of third annual ranking of America’s Best Colleges.
Williams College took the top position of the rakings after placing fourth last year and grabbing the fifth slot two years ago. Williams College is just a small school with a population of just 2,000 undergrads and 7-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
Amanda Esteves-Kraus, a double-major in art history and biology in the class of 2012, said:
“One of the things that we really embrace is that we are tiny and very aware of where we are in the world. This fosters an incredible sense of community. It takes a very specific type of student to go to Williams, and there is a quirkiness here that you can’t find anywhere else. This all makes the fact that we are in the middle of nowhere totally irrelevant because you don’t actually want to be anywhere else.”
The 2010 top college ranking was dominated by Massachusetts-based school, which includes Williams College, Amherst College, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Smith College.
On the other hand, high school graduates have a numerous schools to choose from throughout the United States. In 2009, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, Cal Poly, New York University, Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and UCLA received a huge volume of student applications.
