Atkins Diet May Help Prevent Type II Diabetes
Type II diabetes is one disease that can be prevented. Many who suffer from this developed type of diabetes are overweight. If it goes untreated, it can lead to more health issues like verve damage, blindness and death.
If you are overweight and have been told you stand a risk of developing Type II diabetes, losing weight will help lower the risk. But, which diet do you choose?
Diabetes and Carbohydrates
Normally, when diabetes is diagnosed, the recommended diet is high in carbohydrates and low in fat. Now, it seems that the school of thought is not just changing, but doing a 180.
To understand how this shift came about, you have to know a bit about diabetes. Diabetes is the result of the body nor producing the hormone insulin, or it doesn’t use the hormone correctly. Insulin is what breaks down the sugars in our bodies and makes it into energy.
Blood Sugar Levels
Since the insulin is not doing its proper job in diabetics, the level of blood sugar may become extremely high. Since diabetics seem to be more prone to heart disease, the recommended diet was usually a low-fat diet. An insulin shot could control the insulin levels, so once those were under control, dealing with the heart disease aspect became the issue.
Of course, fat has calories. To replace those calories, carbohydrates were increased. The diabetic’s diet was normally high in vegetables, whole grains, pasta, bread, fruit and nuts. Doctors are now debating the efficacy of this diet.
Diabetics and those at risk of developing diabetes are now being told to switch to a diet low in carbohydrates, like the Atkins Diet. A low-carb diet may soon be the go-to for preventing Type II diabetes.

Most professional recommend a lower carb diet to reduce blood sugar levels. Carbs turn into sugar. It’s pretty simple. And speaking of simple, lowering or eliminating simple carbs (white bread, white rice etc.) is also the way to go. I am a Coach for Diabetics, coaching by phone once per week.
